Help Save After The Races’ Home!

My name is Bonnie McRae, Founder and Director of the non-profit After The Races (ATR) - an organization committed to the rehabilitation and rehoming of retiring racehorses. Since our inception in 2011, we have served nearly 900 horses to new careers and new homes, but very recently we’ve reached a critical juncture in our mission.

I am writing to announce a new and urgent capital campaign, and we hope you will consider joining us in our efforts. On New Years Eve, our landlord delivered the news that the farm ATR calls home will be placed on the market soon. ATR has been renting farms for over 12 years, but we have truly felt “at home” on this property for the last six years. We are launching this campaign to SAVE OUR HOME and preserve a permanent location for racehorses in need upon their retirement from racing.

This is certainly a large-scale fundraiser with a very short deadline. The land owner is asking $1,400,000 for the property. To purchase the farm ourselves, ATR will need to raise at least $800,000. Between what ATR had set aside for a property and just a few early donors, we have already raised $124,000, but we are in need of much more help to save our home and our program.

In addition to providing a PERMANENT home for ATR, purchasing this property, or another, will open up possibilities for expansion to include a dedicated rehabilitation facility for racehorses recovering from track related injuries. ATR would also be able to implement an internship program to promote education of future generations of horsemen and women. Both programs would only continue to benefit more horses over the years.

This campaign has a very short window as our landlord hopes to sell the farm this winter. Please consider making a donation or a pledge to donate a larger amount. Please help ATR not only save its current home, but help to establish a permanent facility that will continue serving retiring racehorses for decades to come.

Our Long-Term Goals For A Permanent Location:

  • Establish a permanent facility for racehorses in transition from racing.

  • Increase our number of stalls to 35+

  • Build a 10+ stall rehabilitation barn solely for treating horses recovering from injuries and surgeries.

  • Subdivide our very large pastures to create more space to separate horses safely, and possibly redo fencing for safer turnout.

  • Build at least one indoor area to work with horses year round, which will keep adoptions flowing even in the heart of winter.

  • Start an internship program to better educate the next generation of horsemen and women.
