The media industry is ever-changing. Be it print or digital, no year’s work, or workload, is the same as the one before it. That is why freelance—and contract—workers must stay on top of editor’s and client’s needs to maintain connections and to establish work, and the best way to do that is to understand what an editor needs from a content creator. But how can you know what an editor is looking for?

Enter The Freelance Remuda Mentorship Program.

Designed by two long-time freelancers and magazine editors, The Freelance Remuda Mentorship Program offers guidance, coaching and education to aspiring freelancers wanting to take their business to the next level. The Mentorship Program was born out of interest that sprung from The Freelance Remuda Podcast, started by Abigail Boatwright and Kate Bradley Byars, in order to give other freelancers the knowledge and tools to elevate equine media.

“We both care deeply about horses, media and telling stories with words and photos,” said Boatwright. “Both of us are professionals in equine media. We care about making our industry better from an individual level and as a whole. That’s why we decided to form The Freelance Remuda.”

Boatwright and Byars began in the editorial industry in 2010, working at the American Paint Horse Association’s Paint Horse Journal and at Western Horseman, respectively. Since then, the two both began their own freelance businesses and have worked for preeminent magazines in equine media. Boatwright currently serves as editor of Western Life Today. Byars has served as managing editor of Ranch Horse News and editor of Reined Cow Horse News

“We launched the Freelance Remuda Podcast in 2017 to  talk with fellow equine creatives about challenges and triumphs of navigating the equine media landscape,” Byars said. “Our bi-monthly episodes and guest blogs include discussions with editors regarding what makes a sought-after freelance professional, and other industry topics.”

Those seeking a mentorship can select one of three program options, then work with Byars and Boatwright through email, worksheets and video or phone conference calls.

“I’m so glad that I decided to invest in the Futurity Mentorship,” said Allison Rehnborg.

“Kate and Abigail gave me the push that I needed to accomplish several important milestones, like setting up my website and focusing on new goals. They offered constructive feedback on my portfolio, helped me hone my pitching skills, and encouraged me to plan the next steps in my career. I’m thankful to count them as colleagues and mentors in the field of freelance equine journalism.”

Helping to cultivate pitches, streamline professional goals or determine the next course shift in a freelance career is all up these mentors’ alley. If you are seeking a route to freelance success in the equine media industry, look into The Freelance Remuda mentorship program to guide your next step.
